In the UK, around 80 per cent of consumer-related legislation originates in Brussels. It is therefore vital for us to influence decision-making in Europe and internationally, as well as in the UK.
We take every opportunity to do this, as early as possible in the policy-making process. This includes working with and lobbying the European Commission, individual MEPs and the European consumer organisation (BEUC).
The priorities we are focusing on in Europe this year include:
• Green and affordable energy
• Sustainable consumption
• Reviewing existing consumer legislation
We are active members of the European consumer organisation (BEUC) and Consumers International.
Effective and targeted consumer policy has the potential to empower consumers, widen competitive markets and encourage innovation. How can we achieve this?
Our ‘making the EU work for consumers’ conference - held on 8th May – facilitated discussion about the European consumer agenda and the challenges and solutions of the digital market. The interactive conference, co-hosted by NCC and the Departments for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR), combined a range of speakers, including an introduction from NCC chair Lord Whitty and an opening address from the Secretary of State, John Hutton. Afternoon workshop sessions addressed a range of subjects, including consumer redress, the review of consumer legislation and new market solutions to empower consumers.
